If the idea of quibbling over price makes you uncomfortable, you’re not alone. It doesn’t come easy for most.
I give credit to my dad for first exposing me to the art of making a deal.
Dad was a farmer, and I grew up in a farming community where negotiating was part of the culture. He was a child of the Great Depression, which I suspect also had a lot to do with his careful handling of money and anything of value.
Negotiating the price of seed wheat or farm equipment was expected, but he didn’t stop there. KEEP READING. . .

$1700! According to the U.S. Department of Labor that’s how much the average American family spent last year on clothing.
Clothing is a necessity, no doubt … we can’t exactly go running around naked. We need to look professional for our job. We need to be warm and protected. We want to dress clean and look nice.
But frankly, that’s a chunk of change I’d rather keep in my pocket. KEEP READING. . .

I had already been a seller on eBay for awhile, selling things I had around the house which I no longer used or wanted. One Saturday as I shopped at the garage sales I loved, I realized I could do much more.

Arbitrage, by definition is buying in one market, selling in another, and profiting from the difference.
I would shop every Saturday morning at garage sales, bargaining for the best price I could get. KEEP READING. . .

Forever! That’s exactly how long I’ve been a budget shopper and how long I have worked to save money on clothing for myself and my kids. Even when I had the money and could have spent more, I usually couldn’t bring myself to do it.
I love to shop for used clothing!
It may not be something you’re willing to consider, and that’s okay. I get it. We all have areas in our life where we are perfectly willing to pinch a penny, pinch it hard in fact. Other areas… not so much. KEEP READING. . .

Following a drastic change in household income recently, I made a quick, impulsive decision to eliminate our rather large monthly cable television bill.
It’s large! It’s unnecessary! It has to go!
In an effort to appease the kiddos, I quickly subscribed to Netflix – still an expense, but minor compared to what a monthly cable bill runs.
Netflix has been working out well for us since we cut the cable, but I wanted to compare KEEP READING. . .

Well, I did it again.
Throughout my life there have been multiple periods during which I decided to go either cable free or completely television free. As I recall, each occurrence of tube-free existence began in about the same way.
Look at this bill!
They’ve raised prices again!
Can you believe 500 channels and not a darn thing to watch!
Each time I’d cancel cable and find other things to do. KEEP READING. . .
